The Duesenbergs were the fastest and most expensive — as much as $25,000 when a physician was making $3,000 per year. They were American made, although it was two German immigrant brothers who engineered the designs, largely self-taught. Many rich and famous owned them, many in the entertainment industry — Clark Gable, Jimmy Cagney, Gary Cooper, Eddie Rickenbacker, Rudolph Valentino, Howard Hughes, Mae West, Tyrone Power, William Randolph Hearst and more.
They were also noted for the power and speed. The model J had from 265 to 400 horsepower — most cars of that era had about 70! Zero to 60 in about 8 seconds was phenomenal, especially considering they weight 2.5 to 3 tons. Top speeds of over 150mph.
